How to Make Play-dough

How To Tuesday

How to Make Play-dough

There are lots of recipes out there for homemade play-dough, here are a few I would like to share:

Basic--No heat required:
1 cup of flour
1/2 a cup of salt
3 tablespoons of water.
Mix
You may need to add water to get the right thickness.

Basic--Cook Style:
1 cup water
1 tablespoon oil (olive or vegetable)
food coloring
1 cup flour
3 teaspoons Cream of Tartar
1/2 cup salt
Bring the first three ingredients to a boil. Mix the next three ingredients well and add to boiling water. Knead. You may need to add more flour to obtain the right texture.

If you don't want to use food coloring you can use Kool-Aid packets for color (un-sweetened, not the kind w/the sugar in it!)
You can also substitute 1 tablespoon alum for the Cream of Tartar.
Make sure you store in an air tight container.

Edible--Peanut Butter:
1 Cup Peanut Butter (creamy)
1 Cup Honey
2 Cups Powdered Milk

Mix
You can use Raisins, Chocolate Chips, Sprinkles or Nuts to decorate.
*Warning--Be aware of peanut &/or Honey allergies when using this recipe!*

Edible--Frosting:
1 can frosting (any flavor)
1-1/2 cups powdered sugar
1 cup creamy peanut butter

Mix

Hope these recipes help with your next rainy day, fun day!

How to strip cloth diapers

How to Tuesday

How to strip cloth diapers

I have been using my cloth diapers for about 3 months now and I have started to notice a little bit of a stronger smell to the dirty diapers. They smell clean after the wash but not so much after they have been worn for a while. So, it's time to "strip" my diapers.
Striping diapers is a way to "renew" them. It helps get rid of odor and detergent build up. It's a normal part of maintaining your diapers.

Steps in Striping Diapers:
#1 Wash as normal, you want to start with clean diapers.
#2 Wash on extreme Hot (you may want to even turn your hot water up a little*) with no soap. You will want to check the machine during the wash cycle to see if there are any soap bubbles, if so you may need to wash them again once the cycle has finished. You can continue Hot washes until there is no traces of soap in the wash cycle.
[*Note: if you don't want to mess with your hot water heater you can heat some on the stove and add it to your washer, be careful!]

I personally use Fuzzi Bunz diapers and tried this method on just the inserts and it worked well.

If you are having trouble with the micro-fleece repelling moisture instead of wicking it away, here is what you should try.
Add just a little bit of Dawn dish washing soap (make sure it's just plain Dawn... no bleach, lotion, etc.) to the wash cycle then continue to wash diapers until there the soap bubbles are gone.
This can be done by hand, and it might work better for just a few diapers at a time.

Drying your diapers in the sun will also help remove stains and sometimes smells!

Featured Product Friday!-- Baby Roo Slings-- Mei Tai

This week's featured product is

Mei Tai
Made by Baby 'Roo Slings

From Baby 'Roo's web site:

Baby ‘Roo Tai’s have a slightly contour body, meaning the bottom of the body of the carrier is just a little narrower. This allows the baby to be worn legs out sooner and more comfortably. The shoulder straps are extra long and are padded for comfort. They are comfortable to wear for extended periods of time and/or with a heavier baby. The bottom strap is not padded and can be rolled once to create a shorter mei tai for newborns or petite toddlers. The top has a curved edge that you can use for head support or roll down so it is out of the way. Roo Tai’s are reversible, and great for mom and dad to share.  You can have the fun/bright/funky pattern you want on one side and a solid color on the other!

Elegant Mommy has a few Mei Tai's on hand and can place custom orders.
Check out Baby 'Roo website for available colors.

These carriers can be used for front carry (like shown in picture above) or back carry.

You can try one out at the baby wearing workshop on Saturday (July 10) at 2:00 PM.

Happy Babywearing!
